Mortise and Tenon

Used in chair and table frames and is very strong. Both square and round tenons are used for furniture construction. Old furniture is usually put together with mortise-and-tenon joints, which consist of a prong held in a hole. With mortise-and-tenon joints a prong or tongue of wood -- the tenon -- is secured in a hole -- the mortise -- in the joining piece. If the joint is blank or stopped, the mortise doesn't extend completely through the joining piece and the end of the tenon is not visible on the outside of the joint. Mortise-and-tenon joints are extremely strong; they're used mostly in chairs and tables but have many uses.
