Splined Joints

In a splined joint, the edges of the joining pieces are grooved or dadoed to match each other and a reinforcing spline -- usually plywood or hardboard -- is inserted into the grooves or dadoes to hold the pieces together. Splined joints are usually used to join narrow boards; in modern construction, plywood is often used to eliminate the need for these joints.
