Stains
Oil-Based stains
Oil-based stains penetrate into the wood without raising the wood
grain. The color can be darkened with more applications and by letting
the stain penetrate the wood longer—just letting it sit
before
wiping excess.
Oil-based stains are rather toxic. Wear a mask and open a window if
it’s not too cold out.
Water-Based stains
Darken the same way you would an oil-based stain (i.e. longer sit
time). Clean with soap and water. Very nice. Not as toxic but may raise
would grain, especially if you don’t condition the wood with
a
moist rag first several times before application. To do this, simply
moisten the wood, just a little, and let dry. Then sand lightly. Repeat
this two times before applying the water-based stain.
Gel Stains
Gels are thick, usually oil-based, and allow more color control because
of the thickness of the stain. There is no swelling or running,
concerns about water damage and the like. You should do a scuff sand
between coats. Also, they are more expensive.
